Challenge:

  • Construct a new sally port entrance and control room within the existing admitting and discharge yard
  • Renovate the existing admitting and discharge areas including the decommissioning of existing control room without impacting the facility's current security and controls
  • All work within the existing facility must be completed after hours to minimize the impact of the facilities daily operations

Objective:

Build a new addition and renovate parts of the existing facility within the aggressive schedule while maintaining safety and security for all parties to meet the customer's strict policies.

All construction must meet the Ministry's security requirement for Detention Centres.

Wingham Health Centre Clinic

Challenge:

  • Renovate a former community Clinic, in an old school building, into a modern Health Centre
  • Expand the clinic by transforming the old gymnasium into a two storey clinical facility
  • Upgrade the facility to incorporate new technology and to be capable of advancing technologically in the future

Objective:
Renovate the former school gymnasium to create a two storeys health centre by adding a new floor structure, a two storey addition on the north side of the building, a one storey addition on the east side of the building, and associated pharmacy, reception and waiting area, and staff offices. The new 13,000sqft centre also needed to be completely accessible.

Elgin-Middlesex Detention Centre (EMDC) Intermittent Facility

Challenge:

  • Design a secure facility for intermittents (individuals sentenced to jail time of 30 days or less) inside the high security fence but segregated from the inmates serving long-term sentences
  • Build a post tensioned membrane structure
  • Require design approval by Detention Ontario and the union representing the Guards
  • Design needed to meet the Province's mandated security levels while giving the inmates a friendlier surrounding
  • Ensure a safe environment for guards

Objective:
Design and build a safe and secure environment to house 120 weekend inmates while keeping the weekend internment centre separate from the long-term prison population. Prisons are traditionally very expensive to build and maintain. Correctional services wanted a “weekend” solution that would be easily maintained, secure, yet cost effective.
